Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to the road in 2027 with Director Carlos Acosta's thrilling reimagining of La Bayadère!
Updating the setting from a mythical 19th-century India to Renaissance Venice, this opulent staging is set to be a captivating ride, highlighting themes of love, lust, and betrayal most tragic, as two men battle for the affections of a young woman. Accompanied by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, who play Ludwig Minkus's rhythmic score, discover this dramatic tale anew or for the first time as interpreted by the modern ballet master.
Glittering and beguiling, La Bayadère is a consummate example of the Romantic ideal in action as eternally pledged love follows the central couple through this life and the next, dreams and tragedy. Featuring one of classical ballet's most beloved and bewitching excerpts that introduces the world of the ghostly maidens, 'The Kingdom of the Shades', this supernatural love story never fails to dazzle and thrill. First performed by the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg in 1877, it has entranced many a choreographer, from Marcus Petipa to Nureyev and beyond, proving itself a timeless tale with every generation.
